Bethan read music at Manchester University, and then went on to specialise as an oboist at the Royal Northern College of Music, where she was tutored by Valerie Taylor, Thomas Davey, Jonathan Small and Mary Gilbert. Since graduating in 2001, she has enjoyed a busy and varied career as a freelance oboist and cor anglais player, performing with many major UK orchestras, such as Opera North, BBC Philharmonic, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Manchester Camerata, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Raymond Gubbay’s Manchester Concert Orchestra and the Hallé amongst numerous others. A particular highlight was playing with Royal Northern Sinfonia on their critically acclaimed recording of Beethoven’s 4th Piano concerto, with pianist Lars Vogt. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Bethan has kept active as a performer, with various recordings, including for Clonter Opera, who she has worked with regularly since 2005. Chamber music has always been a huge part of her musical life and she is a member of several groups, in addition to Manchester Reed Trio. During her time at the RNCM she gained a distinction for the PPRNCM qualification, as a member of The Langdale Ensemble wind quintet. As well as playing for Music in Hospitals and Care with Manchester Reed Trio, Bethan has also works as a soloist, playing for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU-Hear) sessions. Educating has always been important alongside her playing, and as well as a flourishing teaching practice, she regularly devises and leads a variety of education workshops. Since 2013 Bethan has been tutoring for the bi-termly Young Oboes event at the RNCM. In 2018 she was appointed visiting oboe tutor at Bangor University. Bethan is also a keen composer and arranger, having had a student composition performed by the Lindsay String Quartet. She enjoys improvising on her oboe and cor anglais and has worked on a number of projects with her composer husband Norm Skipp, using live electronics, including helping to create the score for the film 45rpm. In 2015, Bethan completed her Dalcroze Intermediate course a week before giving birth to her first son! Sarah is a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester where she studied with David Chatwin, Nick Lander, Peter Wesley and Ed Warren. Originally a flute player, she took up the bassoon at the age of 16 and fell in love with its quirky individuality, versatility and singing baritone voice. Since leaving the RNCM Sarah has firmly established herself as a sought after freelance bassoon and contra player, and regularly works with the majority of the UK’s professional orchestras. Sarah loves the diversity and flexibility of freelance life. Favourites among many highlights include touring Italy and Slovenia on first bassoon with Martha Argerich and Manchester Camerata, repeated appearances at the BBC Proms - including the first one outside of the Royal Albert Hall, in Hull with Royal Northern Sinfonia, playing in a month long run of The Light In The Piazza at The Royal Festival Hall with Renée Fleming and Opera North, touring Japan with the BBC Philharmonic and the RLPO and playing contrabassoon in the first performance of Britten’s incredible opera Billy Budd, at Snape Maltings with Opera North. Alongside orchestral life, chamber music holds a special place in Sarah’s heart. As well as having the privilege to make music with her friends in Manchester Reed Trio Sarah has a special love of the wind quintet, and holds a PPRNCM with distinction as a member of The Langdale Ensemble. Sarah teaches for two independent schools in Greater Manchester and is senior lecturer in contra bassoon at Leeds Conservatoire. She is also one of the external examiners for The Royal Northern College of Music. Sarah is active within the education departments of many of the orchestras she works with. In 2011 she trained as an animateur as part of a pilot scheme set up jointly between Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester Camerata, Northern Chamber Orchestra and Lancashire Sinfonietta. She continues to lead and co lead music and cross curricular workshops for a range of audiences, often in schools and for those with additional needs. Whenever she can, Sarah is an avid skier and she is enjoying encouraging her two young daughters to get the bug! After graduating she spent several years in Portugal as the assistant principal clarinettist with the Orchestra of the Algarve, touring Portugal, Italy and Spain widely. Rachel has a busy freelance career performing with orchestras throughout the U.K. including Northern Ballet, CBSO and Ulster Orchestra. As a chamber musician, in addition to her much-loved work with Manchester Reed Trio, she gives regular recitals with the renowned pianist John Gough Rachel has a particular passion in Music in Healthcare, having spent many years working in care settings with Manchester Reed Trio. She trained with OPUS Music CIC on their apprenticeship programme, working for nine months as a musician at Nottingham QMC Hospital. Rachel is the Director of Cascade Music CIC, a small organisation she set up in 2016 to provide greater access to live music in hospital settings, currently funded by Arts Council England. With classical guitarist Martin Bickerton, she is currently Musician in Residence at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. She currently spends much of her time on playing in A&E to help calm and distract children and families dealing with pain and distress. She recently designed and successfully carried out a clinical study to explore the impact of live music in the Pediatric Emergency Department, which involved playing for eight-hour shifts in A&E whilst recruiting patients to the study! She is one of the founding musicians and trainers for Music in Hospitals and Care’s ground-breaking ICU-Hear programme. From this, she traveled to the Netherlands to share training on bringing live music to Intensive Care Units with Dutch musicians for the organization MuzIC.
